“There’s one investment that supersedes all others—invest in yourself.”
                                               — Warren Buffet

In our complex world today, business environments are constantly changing. Now, more than ever, success is driven not only by innovation, creativity and performance, but also by the ability to quickly adjust to newly emerging business landscapes. To achieve success, these business challenges require that we remove all fixed boundaries to our current modes of thinking and to cultivate our ability to “turn on a dime”, becoming fluid and flexible thinkers. It summons us to broaden our vision with the ability to instantly sharpen focus just like a camera, and to be able to confidently make critical business decisions quickly and wisely.

When it comes to setting and achieving goals, studies show that cutting-edge techniques in Neuroplasticity, the groundbreaking field of neuroscience that studies the brain’s ability to adapt and change, can actually accelerate the brain’s Biological Reprogramming, activating the neurobiological processes of the brain that increase the release of the body’s “happiness hormones”, including endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine--a key neurotransmitter that affects our emotions and sensations of pleasure and pain, and it’s also found to be crucially involved in motivation, creativity, cognitive function and memory--all critical components to reaching business goals and achieving success.

Understanding the mysteries of the brain has long been the subject of tremendous research, and the latest discoveries in Neuroplasticity are ushering in an entirely new era of our understanding of the brain’s ability to reorganize itself throughout our lives, both physically and functionally, as a direct response to our environment, behavior, thinking and emotions-- shattering much of what we previously thought to be true.

Neuroscientists are finally cracking the code to better understand the fascinating mechanics behind the physical neurobiological processes of the brain, slowly unraveling the complex puzzle of just how the brain’s patterns of chemical and electrical signals can produce such truly amazing things such as creativity, inspiration, happiness or love.

Decades of research and cognitive studies are now providing the long missing pieces of the puzzle that help us to better understand the brain’s complex biological connections between brain chemistry, emotions and behaviors, as well as a host of new discoveries regarding impacts on memory, reasoning and decision making.

One of the strongest new neurobiological findings is the discovery of the role that the neurotransmitter dopamine plays on motivation and cognition.

For many years, dopamine had been primarily associated with pleasure, in addition to spikes in the brain during times of stress, pain, or loss. However, recent studies now show that dopamine has a much wider impact than that, and it’s now strongly linked with motivation and quick decision making--an insight that has naturally turned heads in the business world.

In a recent study conducted by Vanderbilt University researcher Dr. Michael Treadway PhD and Professor of Psychology Dr. David Zald PhD, and published in the Journal of Neuroscience, the team used a new state-of-the-art brain-mapping technology called Positron Emission Tomography (PET scan) to analyze the brain patterns of a group of highly motivated Go-getters—those who were strongly driven by goals and willing to work hard for rewards--and compared them to those of so called Slackers--those less motivated and content to work less. The team found that Go-getters were highly influenced by a brain chemistry of much higher levels of dopamine in the striatum and ventromedial prefrontal cortex, areas of the brain known to play an important role in reward and motivation. The Slackers on the other hand, instead had high dopamine levels in the anterior insula, a completely different area of the brain, one that plays a role in emotion and risk perception, pointing to a direct correlation between dopamine’s effect on our overall perception of risk verses reward.

What’s more, it’s not just motivation and risk perception that’s influenced by the brain’s chemistry, but researchers have also discovered that our ability to comfortably make fast split-second decisions could also be powered by dopamine as well.

Decision making is one of the basic cognitive processes of human behaviors, whereby we select a preferred option or a course of action from among a set of alternatives, based on instinct or reasoning. In a recent study, researchers from San Diego’s Salk Institute of Biological Sciences discovered that dopamine governs snap choices so precisely that measuring the level of the neurotransmitter in the brain right before a decision is made will actually allow researchers to accurately predict the outcome.

In their study, the researchers found that even a slight alteration of dopamine levels in the brain is enough to alter what decisions will be made, shedding new light on the powerful forces at play in our body’s brain chemistry, and demonstrating how dynamically changing dopamine levels can have a significant impact on our level of motivation and decision making. A key insight that directly influences our ability to achieve and succeed in our business goals.

The Science of Dopamine

The human body is intricately designed to ensure our survival.

For millions of years, evolutionary biology has created a complex and amazing web of biological intelligence in the form of the brain’s deep sources of neurobiological chemistry, which ensures that we are biologically programmed to seek pleasure and avoid pain, and that all of the everyday pursuits and struggles of life needed to ensure our survival are also guaranteed to naturally feel good and make us happy, providing us with an assured blissful experience when we achieve them as well.

To accomplish this feat, our bodies produce many hundreds, if not perhaps thousands, of neurochemicals that perform a delicate dance to orchestrate our happiness and wellbeing, the vast majority of which scientists are only just beginning to fully understand. This natural biological programing between the neurochemicals and the approximately 100 billion complexly interconnected neurons that make up the human brain is intrinsically generous and well balanced, and dynamically active each and every moment of our lives, ensuring our overall health and wellbeing.

However, chemical imbalances in the brain do occur, and it happens much more often than you might think.

Caused by a wide range of factors from emotional or physical trauma, diet, stress, side effects from certain drugs-- and even lack of sleep--to environmental and genetic factors—all of which prove just how vitally important it is to carefully maintain our body’s natural neurobiological chemistry in balance, and to learn and employ many of the new Neuroplasticity techniques available that help us to optimize our health and succeed to the fullest.

One of the key neurochemicals that scientists are now gaining a better understanding of is the neurotransmitter dopamine—and what we’re learning is revolutionizing the field of neuroscience.

Dopamine is a messenger molecule or neurotransmitter, that allows certain nerve cells of the brain to communicate with one another. Discovered in the 1950s by Dr. Arvid Carlsson, PhD, the Swedish pharmacologist, dopamine was first thought to only be a simple building block of other naturally occurring neurochemicals, and as such, its importance was initially dramatically underestimated.

Today, a wide body of research has now shown that dopamine is vitally critical to a broad array of central nervous system functions—everything from movement, attention, reasoning, and decision making, to mood, motivation, pleasure, risk evaluation and sensations of reward.

Moreover, scientists are now better understanding how dopamine imbalances can have dramatic effects on our health, including the recent discovery of the role of dopamine in Parkinson’s disease, a debilitating illness that occurs when dopamine producing nerve cells, necessary for smooth, coordinated function of the body's muscles and movements, die or become impaired. This discovery has radically changed the understanding of neuroscientists regarding dopamine’s dramatic impact on motor functions of the body, and has led to profound breakthroughs in the current treatment of the disease.

And it’s not just the discovery of dopamine’s role involving motor functions. There is now a growing body of evidence that dopamine imbalance can cause a wide range of symptoms and illnesses that degrade our heath--from food cravings, mood swings, poor memory and sleeplessness, to more serious issues such as chronic fatigue, ADHD, depression, and increased predisposition to lifelong cycles of substance abuse and addiction.

Although dopamine has long been understood to affect the brain’s pleasure centers, helping researchers to better understand the physical brain chemistry—not weakness of character—that makes some more susceptible to the ravages of addiction, new studies are now shedding light on other important ways in which dopamine effects the brain, and are better understanding its role in motivation and reward-driven behavior.

Some have dubbed it “The Reward Molecule”, because research shows that it’s dopamine that drives the motivation for nearly every type of reward based behavior that has ever been studied, indisputably linking the two.

If you want to naturally increase dopamine, researchers say just set a goal and work to achieve it.

What’s more, studies also show a direct correlation to dopamine levels and our ability to regulate our emotions, enabling us not only to seek rewards, but to also take action to move toward them. In studying the emotional regulation response to dopamine, researchers have been able to identify the presence of a particular type of dopamine receptor that is associated with people typically known as “risk takers”, giving greater meaning to the term “entrepreneurial spirit.”

It seems there may actually be a biological basis for entrepreneurial qualities after all.

Unravelling The Business Gene

It's an age-old debate not easily settled, as to whether or not entrepreneurs are born or made—however most would agree that to reach professional goals and to succeed in business requires the ability to carefully calculate and be comfortable with risk, think fast and on your feet, and to possess the qualities that make for a good leader.

We all know that taking risks, especially in business can be stressful, and that some of us seem to think and function better under stress, becoming natural leaders, able to positively influence outcomes and those around us--while others seem to falter or completely fall apart.

When it comes to being good at business, it seems some of us just might have a bit more of a genetic edge.

Now, the latest findings in neuroscience may be coming to the rescue to finally settle this debate.

Studies now show that there may in fact be a “business gene” after all, as recent research has found that genetic variations in dopamine receptors in the brain can directly affect the predisposition to be an entrepreneur by influencing the tendency to seek sensation and take risks, be quick thinkers and think sharply under stress, as well as affect overall leadership qualities as well.

Science shows that environmental factors combined with the DNA we inherit can trigger certain types of dopamine receptors to be more active, such as gene DAT1, for instance, which can positively influence a person’s leadership skills, provided the genes and the environment work together in ways that these traits can flourish.

What’s more, it’s not just business. It seems that there might just be a “successful” gene as well.

Science is now pointing to new evidence that suggests that having the qualities that lead to overall success in most areas of our lives may also lie directly within our genes.

In a recent research study conducted by Professor Dr. Daniel Belsky, PhD and his colleagues at Duke University School of Medicine, the team discovered a direct connection between the presence of specific genes and the achievement of better socioeconomic outcomes in their life.

Professor Belsky says, “Though DNA isn’t destiny, it does have something to say about the kind of people we become and what we achieve. When we studied this existing data set from a group of people who were all born in a single city and then surveyed at regular intervals throughout the first four decades of their lives, we found that those who carried certain genetic variants—ones that had already been linked to educational attainment in other studies—hit developmental benchmarks earlier as children and held higher aspirations as teenagers. Then, as adults, they attained more education, held more prestigious jobs, earned higher incomes, partnered with better-off mates, were more socially and geographically mobile, managed their money more effectively, and accumulated more assets. All of that does suggest our genes can affect our future. But we also know that human development stems from a complex interaction of the genes we inherit and the environments we encounter. Nature and nurture combine to make us who we are. We’re just beginning to understand how that interplay operates.”

These genetically based characteristics for success are given to us through what scientists call Genetic Inheritance and Epigenetic Inheritance, the two processes by which genetic information passes from one generation to another.

In Genetic Inheritance, physical and biological traits are passed from parents to offspring through DNA encoding.

Epigenetic Inheritance on the other hand, revolutionizes the idea that inheritance happens only through the DNA code at the genetic level, but rather shows us that even our parent's beliefs and experiences, in the form of epigenetic tags, can also be passed down to future generations.

Groundbreaking new research in the field of Epigenetics has been critical to understanding the connection between how genes, environment, emotions, beliefs and neurobiological programming all work together to shape our future.

Epigenetics, meaning “above-the-gene”, is the study of changes in our gene expression that do not directly involve changes to the underlying DNA sequence, in turn affecting how cells read the genetic information. It refers to how gene expression changes throughout our life and is flexible, not written in stone.

Science now tells us that everything from environment to diet and nutrition—and even our emotions and beliefs—all have a profound effect on our Epigenetic gene expression, with the ability to affect how genes turn off and on, creating a profound impact on our health, well-being and personal development. Learning to optimize our genetic footprint is the first step to cultivating skills to succeed in business and to acquire life-long success.

Neuroplasticity & Biological Reprogramming

Science has taught us many things in the past 400 hundred years, but perhaps the most important thing that it has taught us, is that what we know is constantly changing.

Not long ago, the prevailing wisdom in science was that we were born with a set number of brain cells that could never be replaced, a set level of intelligence that could never change, and that our genes determined if were athletic, creative, talented or healthy—or not.

Basically, like it or not, we were stuck with the hand that the genetic cards had dealt us.

Now, researchers working on the leading-edge of science are rapidly shattering this old view, as evidence continues to mount to support that our inherited traits and health are not actually set in stone, but rather that we’re much more of a continual work in progress.

In fact, groundbreaking research in Epigenetics and Neuroplasticity have proven that not only are our brains continually changing, but we also have a tremendous amount of control over how our genetic traits are expressed as well. We quite literally have the ability to build a better brain and to change our gene expression at any time in our lives, thanks to what we’ve learned from the latest discoveries genetics and neuroscience.

If it sounds too good to be true, it’s actually not.

The fields of Neuroplasticity and Epigenetics have been heralded as two of the most important breakthroughs in the last four hundred years of science. For those who suffer from neurobiological imbalances or are unlucky enough to have received unwanted or unhealthy DNA patterns, emerging new treatments could be the key to reset your neurobiological programming, to not only improve health and wellbeing, but to help you accelerate your potential to reach success and achieve your goals as well.

That’s why brain plasticity is so important, and why using Neuroplasticity to optimize the neurochemical balance of the brain to naturally increase levels of dopamine is an excellent way to enhance it.

Studies show that even just a small amount of dedicated practice can yield dramatic results, quickly improving cognitive function that leads to clearer and more effortless thinking.

Professor Dr. Torkel Klingberg PhD, of Karolinska Medical Institute in Sweden, is the lead researcher on a recent study published in the Journal Science, that has for the first time demonstrated that Neuroplasticity memory training brings about increased levels of activity in the dopamine receptors in the human brain. Using PET scanning to map the brain’s detailed biochemical changes, the study offers greater insight into the complex interplay between cognition and the brain's complex neurobiological system.

Professor Klingberg says, "Brain biochemistry doesn't just underpin our mental activity; our mental activity and thinking process can also affect the biochemistry," which at its core, is precisely how Neuroplasticity training works to kickstart our Biological Reprogramming.

What’s more, even those with genetic causes for lower dopamine levels can use the power of Neuroplasticity and Biological Reprograming to overcome them to activate and accelerate brain chemistry for success.

Cellular biologist Bruce Lipton, PhD, is one of the leading authorities on Epigenetics, and the author of the best-selling book The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter, & Miracles, where he outlines the scientific basis of the dramatic effects that beliefs and emotions can have in regulating gene expression.

Dr. Lipton explains that the key to effecting change in gene expression is not only understanding the DNA response to physical environmental factors, which has long been accepted amongst traditional medical science, but also understanding that this "environment" that our genes respond to also includes our conscious thoughts—as well as feelings, emotions and beliefs that we have as well. The “environment” of the body is the sum of all of these things.

These Epigenetic discoveries have given us an entirely new understanding of how the mind and body interact at the genetic level, and provide us the tools to take back control of how our genes are expressed.

There is a notion that at the most fundamental human level, we all share a powerful Genetic and Epigenetic Inheritance to succeed, descended from our earliest human ancestors, who left the relative safety of the Great Rift Valley on the African savanna to venture out and explore, eventually populating the entire the world.

Make no mistake, they were indeed the greatest of risk takers, quick thinkers, and fearless leaders.

Today, revolutionary new science empowers us to take charge of who we are and what we become.

Using the latest techniques in Neuroplasticity and Biological Reprogramming we can make a shift to better understand our powerful personal and collective Genetic and Epigenetic Inheritance, and see the entirely holistic nature of our mind-body wellness, activating and optimizing our natural neurobiological systems to build a better brain to increase motivation and cognition to reach for and achieve our goals.
