Stress, deadlines and toxic emotions amongst colleagues in the workplace are all too common, disrupting workplace harmony and eroding enthusiasm, creativity and productivity.
So how do we maintain a personal sense of balance and even thrive professionally despite these unfavorable conditions?
The answer is to bring Meditation and Mindfulness into your workday.
Meditation calms the mind and relaxes the body. Mindfulness increases your moment-to-moment awareness and enables you to observe destructive workplace patterns without reacting to them on “auto-pilot”. The two practices combine to decode and recode your mind to think in healthier, less stressful, more beneficial ways.
The principles of Meditation and Mindfulness are at the core of most Eastern traditions, such as Zen, Buddhism and Vedanta, which all teach the practice of focused attention and increased moment-to-moment or present moment awareness.
At the core of Mindfulness is the practice of Meditation, dedicated time spent carefully quieting the mind. When we meditate and become present moment, we shut down the endless background chatter of our minds that perpetually propel us forward and backwards in time, reliving the past and pre-planning the future. In the stillness of this quiet, we open our awareness to gaining higher insights. Meditation is also good for the body in countless ways. It brings about balance physically, mentally and emotionally as well.
Mindfulness is best described as a form of meditation in action. It’s focused attention to being here now. When we are both mindful and present-moment, we access a higher awareness of ourselves and our surroundings, gaining clarity to observe these things simply as they are. Aware of our thoughts and feelings, we become free of judgment of the events and circumstances taking place around us—and in the complex and often hellfire professional world of business, there is no greater asset to bring calm, peace and sanity to our daily life.
We’ve all felt the negative impacts of stress and tension in our professional lives at one point or another-- whether it’s crazy busy schedules, challenging technical demands, or that unreasonable colleague or client that is forever leaving everything feeling that much more difficult. The negative impacts of professional stress have been extremely well-documented, contributing to everything from ill health, low morale and poor decision-making, to increased conflict and reduced productivity. It’s a real and pervasive problem that has very real effects on both personal well being and business bottom lines.
However new research has shown that Meditation and Mindfulness in the workplace can substantially reduce these common negative outcomes by lowering stress and anxiety, reducing interpersonal conflict, and providing an overall increase in resilience and Emotional Intelligence—the integration of our imagination, creativity and emotions-- creating a more balanced and integrated approach to the way we navigate our professional lives.
Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence combine to increase self-awareness and self-management skills, which not only increase our ability to stay aware of our own emotions and manage our own reactive behavior and tendencies, but also to increase our ability to understand the emotions, moods, motives and behavior of others –so that we better understand what really lies at the root of difficult workplace interactions. In doing so we become less reactive, and we respond and communicate more clearly and appropriately. This enables us to effectively manage these situations and relationships more far more effectively.
Mindfulness practice also is good for overall business as well.
Reports show that a few minutes of Mindfulness practice at the very start of a meeting will usually lead to improved focus, clearer communication and improved decision making of those involved. Teams and network groups who practice Mindfulness, even for a just few minutes a day, have reported improved collaboration and creativity, and an increase in their ability to think “outside of the box", leading to better creativity and improved innovation.

The good news is that the more we practice, the easier it gets—and it’s now scientifically proven.

As we practice Meditation and Mindfulness and discover greater Emotional Intelligence, our brains actually change and adapt to make it easier. Billions of neurons lining the paths between the rational and emotional centers of our brain grow, expand and branch out, much like a tree, literally creating new neural pathways to reinforce our new learning. A single neuron can grow more than 10,000 new connections to reinforce what we’ve learned, and ensure that it’s that much easier for our minds to think in healthier, less stressful ways, and to be more mindful and present moment in the future.
