Natural Principles of Frankincense Carteri Essential Oil
Frankincense Carteri Essential Oil is one the crown jewels of Essential Oils. It was a highly prized and precious oil out of all the ancient essential oils due
to its versatility and infinite healing properties.
Botanical Name: Boswellia Carteri
Botanical Family: Burseraceae (frankincense)
Extraction Method: Steam distilled from gum/resin
Historical Traditional Uses
Frankincense Oil goes down history as the most valuable prized oil in the world and the source of a major trade empire. It was so expensive in Europe
that southern Arabia became known as Arabia Felix, “Arabia the Blessed.” It has been known throughout the ages for its medical and spiritual
qualities.
The medicine of the ancient Egyptians is some of the oldest documented. Dating back to the beginnings of the civilization in the c. 33rd century BC
until the Persian invasion of 525 BC, Egyptian medical practice went largely unchanged and was highly advanced for its time, including simple non-
invasive surgery, setting of bones and an extensive set of pharmacopoeia. Egyptian medical thought influenced later traditions, including the Greeks.
There are thousands of years of records that use Frankincense by healers for virtually any ailment imaginable and for this reason it was more expensive
than gold.
Frankincense was used medically in Egypt with 877 prescriptions and recipes documented in the Papyrus Ebers of 1500 B.C., priests recommended
both resins for the treatment of wounds including to cure toothaches, hemlock poisoning, leprosy, worms, snakebites, plague, diarrhea, scurvy and even
baldness. It was also used for ulcers, hypertension, nausea, fever, indigestion, chest coughs and post-childbirth recovery.
Frankincense Oil was found in King Tutankhamen’s tomb in Ancient Egypt. King Tut died in 1323 BC.
The women of ancient Egypt utilized the ash of Frankincense for personal use as well, mixing it into their eye shadow.
Frankincense was also widely used for religious ceremonies and burials. It was used as an embalming material, an offering to the departed and a
means to cover the odor of the dead body.
Frankincense oil was often prescribed for syphilis, rheumatism, respiratory and urinary-tract infections, skin diseases and digestive complaints during
the ancient cultures of Egypt, Persia, Israel, Rome and Greece.
Burning the resin of Frankincense drove away mosquitoes and other flying insects, reducing incidences of malaria in afflicted regions.
In Ayurvedic medicine Frankincense has been used for hundreds of years for treating arthritis, healing wounds, strengthening the female hormone
system and purifying the air and creating a space of worship. The use of burning Frankincense daily in the house was thought to bring good health.
Frankincense was treasured for it’s healing powers and the newborn Jesus was anointed with it.
Alain Touwaide, a historian of medicine at the Institute for the Preservation of Medical Traditions and the Smithsonian Institution states, “We have textual
and also archaeological evidence that Frankincense was used as medicinal substances in antiquity.”
Famous Arabian physician, Avicenna in the eleventh-century recommended Frankincense for its cooling effects as a remedy for infections and illnesses that increase the body's temperature.
Frankincense remedies appear in the Syriac Book of Medicine, ancient Muslim texts, and in Ayurvedic and Chinese medical writings.
As a medicine, Frankincense has been used internally and externally to combat almost every disease and condition both physical and mental in
humans and animals by physicians from Ancient Egypt, Rome, Greece to the Middle East, India and China.
As incense, Frankincense was used for all important religious rituals and occasions, and so complete was this link, Frankincense gave rise to what was
known as the ‘odour of sanctity’ associated with sainthood.
In warfare, Frankincense was mixed with pitch, sulphur and other ingredients to produce an almost inextinguishable fire to burn enemy strongholds and
was also fed to war elephants to enrage them before battle.
In the Chinese medicine books, Frankincense was first mentioned in the Mingyi Bielu (Miscellaneous Records of Famous Physicians; ca. 500 A.D.). It
was called fanhunxiang (calling back the soul fragrance) and ruxiang (nipple-shaped fragrance); the latter name has been retained, but the former is true to
the original use of Frankincense as incense for mourning the dead.
In TCM, Traditional Chinese Medicine Frankincense is described as warm and pungent, and enters the heart and lung meridians and it's especially
suitable for conditions where the joints and muscles are very stiff, swollen, and painful.
It is also known to quicken the blood and stretch the sinews, freeing the meridians, soothing the network vessels, and relieving pain.

Science • Frankincense • Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma from Upper Respiratory Tract Infections & Diseases
Epidemiology is the science that studies the patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations. It is the cornerstone of
public health, and informs policy decisions and evidence-based practice by identifying risk factors for disease and targets for preventive healthcare.
World Allergy Organization states, "During the 1960's there was an Epidemiological Study which showed clinical observations of an association
between allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma.
The study was about the effectiveness of specific immunotherapy, approximately 50% of a control group of children, who received no immunotherapy,
developed asthma within a few years.
A survey of 99 patients followed up for 10 years after the initial diagnosis of allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma or both, showed that:
• 32% of rhinitis patients developed asthma.
• 50% of patients with asthma alone developed rhinitis.
A number of studies from around the world have shown that:
• 70-90% of patients with asthma have concomitant rhinitis.
• 40-50% of patients with allergic rhinitis have concomitant allergic asthma.
The World Allergy Organization (WAO) states, "Uncontrolled allergic rhinitis can lead to worsening of co-existing asthma. Prompt and effective
treatment of nasal disease can have a marked beneficial effect on preventing the development of asthma and on existing asthma symptoms.
There was a study done at Division of Wellness and Chronic Illness,
Department of Family Medicine, University Hospital and Medical Center, Health Sciences Center, State University of New York at Stony Brook, where it
states, “The addition of essential oils to the dietary regimen of patients with chronic bronchitis is worth exploring, and also herbs like Boswellia."
Science • Frankincense • Anti-Conflict Effect
Frankincense Essential Oil was tested in a behavioral study at the
Environmental Health Science Division, National Institute for Environmental Studies in Japan. Frankincense oil decreased the response rate during the
safe period.
Science • Frankincense • Anti-Depressant
The National Institutes of Health states, "Major depressive
disorder is the leading cause of disability in the United States for people ages 15--44, affecting approximately 14.8 million American adults. A less severe
form of depression, dysthymic disorder, affects approximately 3.3 million American adults. Anxiety disorders affect 40 million American adults, and
frequently co-occur with depressive disorders." New studies show that Frankincense Essential Oil Boswellia carteri species resin makes an extremely
important natural constituent called incensole acetate that expresses forceful activities. So potent that the Boswellia resin constituent, when tested in mice
lowers anxiety and causes antidepressive-like behavior.
Science • Frankincense • Anti-Microbial- from the Pharaohs and their First Prescriptions
The Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Witwatersrand, Parktown, South Africa did an interesting
study with Frankincense Essential Oil using one of the first prescriptions from the Ancient Egyptians from their vast materia medica. It's wonderful that
science is confirming holistic medicine from the Ancient Egyptians.
Ancient Egyptian Medical Records breakdown according to The Pharmaceutical Journal.
The materia medica is recorded in 12 medical papyri written in hieratic
script, a shorthand development of hieroglyphs, detailing the ailments and treatments endured in ancient Egypt. Translated into Latin, German or English,
they illustrate the relative sophistication of medicine in ancient Egypt, continuity of practice and longevity of remedies. Most significant pharmaceutically
are:
• The Kahun Papyrus (ca 1850 BC) dating to Amenemhet III (this was found by archaeologist Flinders Petrie at the workman’s village in
the Fayoum, and contains 33 gynaecological remedies).
• The Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus (ca 1550 BC), detailing 48 cases of physical trauma.
• The Ebers Papyrus, dating to Amenhotep I (1546–1526 BC), found in the Valley of the Kings and containing 877 remedies.
• The Chester Beatty Papyrus found at Deir el Medina, dating to Ramses III (1150 BC) and specializing in colorectal conditions.
Science • Frankincense Carteri • Bladder Cancer
Wonderful studies with Frankincense Essential Oil and bladder
tumors were done at University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City, OK 73104, USA with the Department of Urology, Department of
Physiology, Department of Comparative Medicine, Department of Pathology, along with the Oklahoma City Veterans Affairs Medical Center Oklahoma City,
OK, USA and the Arthritis and Immunology Research Program at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation Microarray Research Facility, Oklahoma
City, OK, USA. The conclusion of the study, "Frankincense oil appears to distinguish cancerous from normal bladder cells and suppress cancer cell
viability. Microarray and bioinformatics analysis proposed multiple pathways that can be activated by Frankincense oil to induce bladder cancer cell death.
Frankincense oil might represent an alternative intravesical agent for bladder cancer treatment."
Science • Frankincense Carteri • Immune System Builder - Lymphocytes - White Blood Cells
To have healthy and strong immune responses, the immune system needs lymphocytes. There are two main types of lymphocytes, B cells and T cells.
Antibodies that attack bacteria and toxins are made from B cells. T Cells go on the hunt and attack cells that have become compromised and have been
programmed with a virus or any other disease including HIV, Aids and Cancer. So it was very exciting to have a study
done at the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Mansoura University, Mansoura, Egypt regarding the Immunomodulatory activity of Frankincense Oil. The outcome was, "Biologically, the oil exhibited a
strong immunostimulant activity (90% lymphocyte transformation) when assessed by a lymphocyte proliferation assay."
Science • Frankincense Carteri • Chronic Inflammatory Diseases
National Institute of Health states, "The inflammatory response (inflammation) occurs when tissues are injured by bacteria, trauma, toxins, heat, or any other
cause. The damaged cells release chemicals including histamine, bradykinin, and prostaglandins. These chemicals cause blood vessels to leak fluid into
the tissues, causing swelling. This helps isolate the foreign substance from further contact with body tissues.
Clinical trials were done at Lehrstuhl Pharmakologie für
Naturwissenschaftler, Pharmazeutisches Institut der Universität Tübingen, Deutschland on, "Boswellic acids (components of Frankincense) as the active
principle in treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases". The outcome, “In clinical trials promising results were observed in patients with rheumatoid
arthritis, chronic colitis, ulcerative colitis, crohn's disease, bronchial asthma und peritumoral brains edemas.
Science • Frankincense and DNA
Immunologist Mahmoud Suhail wrote: "Cancer starts when the DNA code within the cell's nucleus becomes corrupted. It seems Frankincense has a re-set
function. It can tell the cell what the right DNA code should be. Frankincense separates the 'brain' of the cancerous cell - the nucleus - from the 'body' - the
cytoplasm, and closes down the nucleus to stop it reproducing corrupted DNA codes."
