Dream Time | Scientists Learn To Record Our Dreams

Amazing Breakthrough In Brain Visualization Imaging

September 06, 2016

Are you one of those people who has trouble remembering their dreams? I know some people who swear they don’t dream at all because they are never able to recall any details about the previous night’s adventures in the mind (though of course, this is impossible). Now, Japanese scientists have done the unthinkable in a project which sounds straight out of a sci-fi movie — they have learned how to record your dreams by measuring your brain activity while you sleep.

The data that is collected can then be plugged into an algorithm that is capable of reconstructing your dream so that it can actually be played back for you when you’re awake. Basically, these scientists have invented a dream reading machine; once this technology is perfected you may never have to worry about forgetting your dreams again, because you can simply play them back to yourself when you wake up in the morning. Incredible.

The Science

This amazing breakthrough is possible thanks to a fairly straightforward idea — when we visualize various objects in our minds, our brains generate neural patterns that can be linked to what we are visualizing. If you are imagining a house, for example, your brain generates a pattern that shows up every time the house is visualized. An algorithm can then be utilized that ties the data from a brain scan to the applicable correlated images. And just like that, the images in your brain can be reconstructed.

Keep in mind that this research is still in progress and is fairly rudimentary. So far, researchers have claimed to correctly interpret the dream about 60% of the time, which is still a pretty big deal when you consider that this is even possible at all.

If you think a dream recording machine is pretty amazing, imagine being able to completely control weather, walk through walls, fly or even create worlds. That's exactly what each and every one of us has the ability to do in the world of lucid dreaming. And guess what? There is more than thirty years of scientific data that proves we actually can.

Lucid dreaming is the art of becoming conscious within our dreams, and research shows that there can be tremendous benefits in our waking world from learning to cultivate it.

Charlie Morley, teacher and European expert of lucid dreaming and author of the best-selling book Lucid Dreaming: A Beginner's Guide to Becoming Conscious in Your Dreams, explains, "A lucid dream is one in which you realize, ‘Aha! I’m dreaming!’ while you’re still asleep. Once you become conscious within a dream, you can interact with and direct it at will, choosing to fly through the sky or more interestingly, interact with personifications of your own mind."

Researchers still are not sure precisely what happens in the mind during lucid dreaming, but it's believed that we enter a hybrid state between REM sleep (the stage of sleep where we have the most vivid dreams) and being awake. In a lucid dream we've not yet awakened--and in fact we're still very much sound asleep--however the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex part of the brain has been reactivated, allowing us to experience the dream state consciously with self-reflective awareness. Once we realize that we're dreaming-- while still dreaming--that's when we begin to lucid dream, and in doing so gain access to the most powerful virtual reality generator in existence: the mind.

What's more, as we all know, dreams can and often do feel very real. Sensations in a lucid dream often feel just as real as they do in the real world.  During a lucid dream, research subjects reported that they could vividly experience their dreams-- feel the sand of an exotic beach slip between their toes for instance, delight in the taste of a delicious meal, or feel the passion of a romantic kiss. However more than just being a sort of Inception like pleasure garden dreamscape, researchers have found that lucid dreaming actually has real-world benefits. And we can thank the neuroplastic nature of our brains for that.

Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to literally rewire itself in response to stimuli. That's why we get better at repeated tasks. Multiple studies in dream based science and cutting edge Neuroplasticity using MRI and other technology suggests that, as far as our brains are concerned, "seeing is believing" --even if we are only dreaming or imagining--it's no different than if we were actually seeing or experiencing it in the real world--the brain interprets the imagery all the same. Therefore, lucid dreaming, like creative visualization or Quantum Creativity, becomes a powerful tool for positive focused attention in all aspects of our life--whether it's training for a marathon or quitting smoking--or much bigger and loftier goals--or even as simple as de-stressing, relaxing, the Neuroplastic changes to our brains during lucid dreaming are deeply pronounced. And in terms of or physical or mental healing, Quantum Creativity using lucid dreaming techniques can have enormous positive real life impacts. And if the many accomplishments of the subjects of lucid dreaming research are any example, then the sky's the limit to what lucid dreaming can do to benefit our waking lives. As they say, we may only be limited by what the mind can dream up.
