Natural Principles of Basil Essential Oil
Basil Essential Oil has a full bodied sweet, spicy, woodsy, grassy aroma that has a gracious generous energy that calms and lifts a person’s spirits while stimulating their mind.

Historical Traditional Uses
Basil Essential Oil has the heritage for being known as "The Royal Oil”. Basilicum comes from the Greek word 'Basilicos' meaning 'king' or 'royal' and the
herb was used in throughout the ancient world in ceremonies of the anointment of kings.
In addition to its long history of culinary use, Basil has an equally long history as a medicinal herb. The Greek physician Dioscorides, was a physician, pharmacologist and botanist,
the author of De Materia Medica, a five volume encyclopedia about herbal medicine and related medicinal substances that was widely read for more than 1,500 years. He prescribed Basil
for headaches, to strengthen the mind and heart and to reinforce resistance against infectious diseases.
Historically Basil has been used to treat a myriad of problems such as flu, fever, insect bites, nausea, anxiety, muscular aches, pulmonary infections and infectious diseases.
In Ayurveda, one of the oldest medical traditions, which translates as "knowledge of life" and dates back more than 5000 years to the ancient Vedic Tradition, Basil was commonly
used to sharpen and strengthen the mind, while enhancing memory. It was also used to treat respiratory conditions such as coughs, chest colds and bronchitis.
A much favored herb in India, it is held sacred to Krishna and Vishnu in Hindu tradition. Basil leaves are chewed and oil applied to the body before taking part in religious ceremonies.
Basil is also said to have protective qualities. Hindu tradition places Basil sprigs on the chests of the dead to protect them from evil spirits.
There is also evidence that traditional Chinese medicine historically used Basil. Fresh roots and leaves of “Holy Basil” were prepared as a tea, or sometimes as a topical treatment to
speed wound healing.
Basil was listed in Hildegard's Medicine, a compilation of early German medicines by highly regarded Benedictine herbalist Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179).
Europeans also inhaled Basil powered leaves to treat migraines and chest infections in the 16th century. During the same time women in Italy believed and wore Basil to attract suitors.

In a study by the Dept. of Clinical Microbiology, at the University Hospital in Reykjavik, Iceland,
scientists found that Basil (Ocimum basilicum) Essential Oil has good anti-bacterial and antimicrobial effects on acute otitis media, caused by ear infections. The main treatment of the
study used Basil Essential Oil components which cured or healed 56%–81% of infections caused by H. influenzae and 6%–75% of pneumococci caused infections, compared with 5.6%–6% cure rates
with the placebo group. Their conclusion was that Basil Essential Oil or its components placed in the ear canal can provide effective treatment of common middle ear infections.
