Zen Habits | A Guide To Letting Go Of Attachments

Simple Steps To Free Yourself And Enjoy Life In The Present

“The root of suffering is attachment.”-- Buddha

I’ve been finding more and more that the Buddha had it right: pretty much all of our struggles, from frustrations to anxiety, from anger to sadness, from grief to worry, all stem from the same thing …

The struggles come from being too tightly attached to something.

When we’re worried, we are tightly attached to how we want things to be, rather than relaxing into accepting whatever might happen when we put forth our best effort. When we’re frustrated with someone, it’s because we’re attached to how we want them to be, rather than accepting them as the wonderful flawed human they are. When we procrastinate, we are attached to things being easy and comfortable (like distractions) rather than accepting that to do something important, we have to push into discomfort. And so on.

OK, if you’re ready to accept that being too attached, clinging too tightly, is the cause of our struggles … then the answer is simple, right? Just loosen the attachments. Just let go.

Easier said than done. Any of us who have tried to let go of attachments knows that it’s not so easy in practice. When our minds are clinging tightly, we don’t want to let go. We really, really want things our way.

So what’s the answer, then? In this short guide, we’ll look at a few practices to help with this.

QDNA® Quantum Connection
The single most common thread shared amongst all of us is that we all yearn to feel happy. All too often however we look outside ourselves to find this happiness, pinning our joy to people, things and ideals in order to validate contentment in our lives—and then we cling to these things for absolute dear life—deeply and inseparably attached to them--fearful of even the smallest bit of change—or heaven forbid—a loss of that which we have become so utterly attached to. When these things come and go, as all things do in the ever changing cycles of life, we see this not as an opportunity to change but rather as a terrible “loss” that shatters our sense of joy and sends us melting into “grief”.

And it’s not just the tangible things that we become attached to. We also become attached to feelings and beliefs, as if at our core they are a permanent part of who we are. Regretfully it’s not just positive ones that we become attached to. Anyone who has ever wallowed in disappointment or regret understands this ever so clearly. For better or worse, in our efforts to hold on to the familiar, we limit our ability to experience joy of the present and the new. And although it’s not always easy to let go of our attachments, when we do we liberate ourselves and truly embrace the unbridled freedom that life has to offer. And as the great Greek Philosopher Thucydides once said, “The secret of happiness is freedom and the secret to freedom is courage.” And if we find ourselves clinging, all we ever need is a little courage to simply let go.
